How to Grow Vegetables Indoors

If you think you need the great outdoors to bring your garden to life, think again! Don’t let limited garden space or a challenging climate scare you away from growing your own vegetable garden. Today's vegetable growers are getting creative and learning to generate bountiful harvests, even inside their own homes. Growing vegetables indoors isn't rocket science but there are a few things you should know if you want to produce your own deliciously-ripe home-grown veggies.

Read on to learn how you, too, can grow vegetables indoors!

Start With the Right Ingredients

The first step in becoming an in-house farmer is to choose the right kind of vegetables.  Also growing veggies indoors means you don’t have to wait for the right season. You can grow fresh indoor vegetables at any time of the year.

Some crops require a lot of time and vast outdoor spaces but many others flourish indoors. Fast-growing leafy greens for example, are surprisingly indoor-friendly and will grow well, both indoors and out.

Some of the top choices for a beginner's indoor garden include the following:

  • Radishes
  • Onions
  • Herbs
  • Carrots
  • Salad Greens
  • Kale
  • Garlic
  • Peppers

While it is possible to grow a number of vegetables indoors, some patience, care, and the right conditions are essential. Expert indoor garden design has the power to produce everything from juicy, ripe tomatoes to big, hearty potatoes... grown fresh from home.

Must-Have Supplies for Your Indoor Garden

Along with the right seeds, there are a few essential supplies you will need if you want to reap the seeds you've sown.

Much like their outdoor counterparts, growing indoor vegetables requires some preparation. Without the right supplies, your indoor garden may never grow.

But, don't worry if this is your first attempt at gardening indoors. You won't need any sophisticated farming equipment to achieve success.

Before getting started, make sure that you have the following to-hand:

  • Indoor Potting Soil
  • Appropriately-Sized Containers
  • Dedicated Window Space and/or Grow Lights
  • Spray Bottle and/or Humidifier
  • Watering Can or Bottle
  • Fresh, Clean Water

This is not a complete list and may involve a few inexpensive tools to make the job easier.

A Garden of Your Own

Assess your own circumstances and surroundings to align with your individual needs.

For example, you may not need grow lights if you have a bright, sunny space that catches around 12 hours of rays (or more). Other indoor growers may need to supplement natural sunlight with special bulbs made to mimic the effects of the sun.

Whether or not you need filtered water depends on the quality of your home's water supply. If your tap water is fit for drinking, it's probably fit for gardening as well. But, if your water supply is particularly harsh, you may need to filter the water or use bottled water to hydrate your home-grown crops.

You may also consider a hand shovel and protective gloves and for just a relatively small cost, most growers will agree they are well worth the investment.
